Sarzhin Yar is adjacent to the botanical gardens of Kharkiv University named after Karazin. Its area is almost 42 hectares, and it is the oldest one in Ukraine. It was founded back in 1804, simultaneously with opening of the university. You will see powerful giant trees there, some of them older than a century. Botanical Garden is rightly proud of its beautiful collection of conifers.
And in the greenhouse nature lovers can admire exotic plants all year around. There are about 2400 species in the collection department of tropical and subtropical plants. Botanical Garden is also famous for its collection of orchids. It is well worth going there in February to see all the orchids in their blossoming glory. Yet you can visit Botanical Garden (botsad as Kharkovites nickname it) any time of the year - its a beautiful place always.
